Gloomcap, the Last Gardener

Under the great boughs, where the sun has never reached. Glimmerdeep's world ended in a long dusk, and its people grow what light they have: caps that glow, moss that shines, lamps of glowmoss on every road. Sporehaven is built beneath the caps.

Something has been coming up the threads of the mycelium from below, and where it passes the lights go grey. The Pale Warren went dark first. Beyond it, in the Gardener's Ring where the first light grew, stands Gloomcap, the Last Gardener: a great cap among the dead ones, with no light under it at all.

Glimmerdeep, under the great boughs. The sun has never reached this far down, and it never will. Our world ended in a long dusk; the Tree caught it as the last light went and hung it here, beneath its branches. This is Sporehaven, built under the caps. What light we have, we grow.

Field boss

The SporemotherLevel 16

The Sporemother

The Fogmere, Level 16

A thing of spores and no shape, as big as a boathouse, on the Fogmere's east shore. When she wakes a sweet rot rolls off the mere, and everything near her dies. She pours out spores, rolls over whoever is closest and rains spores like snow; at the end she swells until her skin splits.

It wakes on its own about every half hour, and the whole floor hears it: A sweet rot rolls off the Fogmere: the Sporemother has woken on its shore!

Dungeon

The Mycelium Halls

For a party of up to six, from level 16. Every party walks its own copy.

Below the great stump in the Pale Warren, through the door in its side, once the crawlers round it are cleared. The way down passes the Threadway, where every thread of the deep runs together; the Gloamwing roosts under the stump's crown, and at the bottom the Pale Coil lies wound round the Wellspring, where the Withering comes up.

Gloomcap, the Last Gardener

Level 19

Glimmerdeep's guardian, in the Gardener's Ring: the Last Gardener, who bound himself into the threads to feed the first light with his own life, and was found there by what came up them. Now a dark cap taller than a house, he sweeps the Ring, binds you with threads, and wakes the dead caps around you.

Waits in the Gardener's Ring. Everyone who climbs fights it together, and it grows with them. The first time it falls, Thornreach opens for everyone; then it returns, to be fought again for what it leaves.
